Posted 3 months ago by Kelly Licht

I spoke to Peggy Daniel, a nurse consultant at the Tennessee Board of Nursing on 9/4/19 and below are the currently available free online courses that meet the State's CME requirement for prescribing controlled substances:

  1. Free Online Course through Vanderbilt: 2018 Guidelines: Managing Chronic Pain and Prescribing Controlled Substances: https://vumc.cloud-cme.com/default.aspx?p=20 There is a pre-test, media presentation and test that you must complete for credit

  2. Free Online Course through St. Thomas: St. Thomas Health CME on demand: Tennessee Rx Safety: A Team Approach Parts 1 & 2 – Scroll down to find these courses online via website https://sthscme.com/content/online-cme-courses/

Peggy advises that we don't use Internet Explorer to access these courses.

More information in case you are unfamiliar with this topic (ie haven't renewed your APRN license yet):

APRN prescribers in the state of TN (with a Certificate of Fitness to prescribe and/ or issue legend drugs) need to fulfill the Prescribing Controlled Substance's requirement. Verbiage for APRNs when renewing APRN license every two years: "if in possession of a Certificate of Fitness pursuant to Rule 1000-04-.04... have successfully completed a minimum of two (2) contact hours of continuing education designed specifically to address controlled substance prescribing practices. The continuing education must include instruction in the Tennessee Department of Health’s treatment guidelines on opioids, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, and carisoprodol, and may include such other topics as medicine addiction and risk management tools."
